Through their tutelage of people like Dr. Thomas the greats of tango have educated the next generation at the National Academy of Tango in Buenos Aires. Monte has been responsible for the continuance of tango and their protégés such as Dr. Thomas have contributed to the development of this genre.

As a composer, Thomas has written for chamber groups, big bands, jazz combos, dance and theater. Thomas currently teaches music theory and history at Highline Community College. Working as a clinician/educator, Dr. Thomas has taught clinics and masterclasses at colleges across the US.

“Ben Thomas is a great composer, and an energetic performer who knows
how deep music can go. It is always great fun to play with him.”

Tango DJ workshop
with DJ Eric Lanoix

Saturday 3:00-500;    $35

Being a tango DJ is more than judging the energy on the dance floor and choosing what pieces to play. The tango DJ must know the tempos of the danceable tangos, the rules to make dynamic groupings of 3-4 pieces (called tandas), and, create interesting little snippets of non tango music (called cortinas) to play in-between tandas. If any of this intrigues you then you will find this workshop jam-packed with info. Eric attends conferences with DJ’s from Europe, North America and Japan to hone his DJ skills. He is one of Western Canada’s most in demand DJs known for his knowledge of thousands of Tango recordings and methods for creating the most dynamic tandas. Under DJs like Eric Lanoix the job of the DJ becomes an art.

This event is a milonga, a place where dancers and audience mix and listen or dance to live tango music.

Infatuated by the bandoneon Ben Thomas has been dancing tango and leading tango groups for over 10 years. Having studied with the revered bandoneonist Osvaldo Montes he is highly knowledgeable about music of the Golden Era. As a dancer he is adept at playing the tangos that dancers love.

The Victoria Event Centre is one of the most popular venues downtown and the only theatre and club venue in Victoria. It has a stage over a large dance floor; a unique curved wood bar and true nightclub atmosphere.

Tango and Latin Music Festival regrets that; due to unfortunate circumstances beyond her control Monica Parra and Mariano Padenera have postponed their tour of Western Canada this fall.
