Pablo gained a following the first time he visited Hermann’s Jazz Club and asked to sit in on a set. His skill performing on piano wowed musicians and audience from the get go. No wonder as this Cuban-born pianist first touched a keyboard at age five and was studying at the Matanzas Conservatory of Music by age seven.

Pablo will be playing Afro-Latin repertoire with an international influence including: traditional Cuban music, Latin jazz and modern salsa.  All based on his long and varied professional career as a performer combining his classical training with an interest in his own jazz projects, which encompass jazz, fusion, Latin jazz, and traditional and modern Cuban musical styles.

In  2007 he went to the Academia Nacional del Tango in Buenos Aires and studied with several tango greats, including the maestro bandoneonist, Osvaldo Montes.  He has been performing tango music, traditional to Nuevo and original compositions, over the last decade with: Tango Abrazo Q. E. D. and the Ben Thomas Quartet.

In the last few years, Thomas has performed at the Bumbershoot Arts Festival, Ballard Jazz Festival, Earshot Jazz Festival, Detroit-Montreaux Jazz Festival, Issaquah Jazz Festival, Anacortes Arts Festival, Ellensburg Jazz in the Valley Festival, Tacoma Maritime Festival, Bellingham Art of Jazz Series, and the Juneau Jazz and Classics Festival.

“Ben Thomas is a great composer, and an energetic performer who knows
how deep music can go. It is always great fun to play with him.”

This event is a milonga, a place where dancers and audience mix and listen or dance to live tango music.

Infatuated by the bandoneon Ben Thomas has been dancing tango and leading tango groups for over 10 years. Having studied with the revered bandoneonist Osvaldo Montes he is highly knowledgeable about music of the Golden Era. As a dancer he is adept at playing the tangos that dancers love.

Tango and Latin Music Festival regrets that; due to unfortunate circumstances beyond her control Monica Parra and Mariano Padenera have postponed their tour of Western Canada this fall.
